Santa Maria La Palma is the most interesting cooperative in Sardinia and Aragosta is the most iconic wine of the company. It is the perfect symbol of this winery because it testifies not only the quality of the work of its 300 members but also the great value of Vermentino di Sardegna, one of the most interesting Italian white wines. Aragosta 2015 truly convinced us, that is why we put it in our wine guide “Italian Wines in the World”, but we have to say this year 2016 convinces us even more. The nose is actually very gentle yet incredibly elegant, with notes of ripe yellow fruits (apricot and apple, above all) and Mediterranean scrub. The palate is velvety and harmonious with a long final note of slightly bitter almond. As the name suggests (“aragosta” means “lobster” in Italian), we paired it with a shellfish risotto and we couldn’t have done any better than this.
CANTINA SANTA MARIA LA PALMA
At Santa Maria la Palma, there are no counts, barons or marquises. Instead, there are lots of families of winemakers and farmworkers. Fifty years ago, they were allocated a series of uncultivated plots near the city of Alghero. Rather than a silver spoon, they had strong arms, straight backs, passion, and principles.
The passion that our winemakers have for the art of winemaking and the painstaking analysis of the local area, which is treated with the utmost respect and constant dedication, these are the elements that allow us to achieve the best from our vineyards, that richness embodied by every wine we have ever produced.
