“At Santa Maria la Palma, there are no counts, barons or marquises. Instead, there are lots of families of winemakers and farmworkers. Fifty years ago, they were allocated a series of uncultivated plots near the city of Alghero. Rather than a silver spoon, they had strong arms, straight backs, passion, and principles”. We decided to start with this description from the company profile of Cantina Santa Maria la Palma, in our opinion one of the best Italian examples of evolved cooperative viticulture (over 300 members and 700 hectares of vineyards), to describe their Cannonau “Le Bombarde”, a wine that proved to us two very important things: firstly the incredible level of quality reached by this Sardinian cooperative; secondly that Cannonau can be a great Italian red wine, able to blend robustness with harmony and elegance.
Le Bombarde wine takes the name from the beach where, even today, we find vineyards of red grapes such as Cannonau and Monica di Sardegna. The cannons, represented on the label, are the symbol of the defense and the pride of the Sardinian coastal territory, but they are also the emblem of the strong and determined character of these grapes.
The nose is almost aggressively intense with fruity scents (particularly berries like blackberry and currant but also plum and damson). Earthy and spicy notes, like black pepper, are evident too. The palate is warm, full and velvety, very well balanced, with a slightly bitter aftertaste that makes it persistent and drinkable.
We paired it with a “classic”, a traditional roasted “porceddu sardo” (Sardinian pork) and it was an easy win.
CANTINA SANTA MARIA LA PALMA
At Santa Maria la Palma, there are no counts, barons or marquises. Instead, there are lots of families of winemakers and farmworkers. Fifty years ago, they were allocated a series of uncultivated plots near the city of Alghero. Rather than a silver spoon, they had strong arms, straight backs, passion, and principles.
The passion that our winemakers have for the art of winemaking and the painstaking analysis of the local area, which is treated with the utmost respect and constant dedication these are the elements that allow us to achieve the best from our vineyards, that richness embodied by every wine we have ever produced.
