It’s commonly renowned that Salento is the ideal location for Italian rose wine (together with Lake Garda area, with its famous Chiaretto). That Negroamaro is one of the Italian autochthonous grapes that best suits this kind of vinification is renowned too.
Probably fewer know that Paolo Leo is one of the most interesting Italian wineries that produces excellent rose wines, and our review is aiming to reduce this lack of knowledge.
Paolo Leo is a dynamic winery in the rich oenological scenario of Puglia and in time is becoming an absolute protagonist of Salento, an area that is finally being acknowledged for its outstanding wine production.
We tasted for you the organic Rosato Negroamaro (the packaging is interesting and original) that we now consider one of the best wines in its category.
At first, we liked the colour, a range that goes from light rose to violet, but then the nose really had us with its elegant notes of pomegranate and cloves. The palate is tastefully savory and fresh, with a persistent aftertaste of red fruits.
The pairing was perfect with a delicious seafood risotto.
PAOLO LEO
The history of the Leo family has been always characterized by their love and passion for vines and wines since the early ‘900. In those years, the company’s founder, the grandfather, and namesake of the last heir Paolo Leo, began making wine from grapes picked in “Palmento”, the old underground tanks he used before were now restored and used as a cellar for storing and aging wine. The mission of Leo’s has remained unchangeable during the last century: to offer consumers wines that mirror the smell, flavors and the character of Puglia. In the late 80s, a deep passion and tenacity have led the current owner Paolo Leo to undertake an entrepreneurial path based on the valorisation of wines made from indigenous grape varieties of the Salento like Primitivo, Negroamaro, Malvasia Bianca and Nera di Lecce.
The modern company headquarters, founded in 1989, occupy a total area of about 15,000 square meters, equipped with a state-of-the-art vinification system. It has a barrel room of 400 square meters containing 500 oak barrels with a capacity of 225 liters. However, these modern winemaking technologies were used in harmony with the ancient tradition of which the Leo family has always respected.
