We have always admired the Colli Piacentini, which we feel is one of the wine-growing regions that should receive much more attention from wine writers.
The Il Poggiarello winery, located in the picturesque Val Trebbia, has been one of the greatest examples of quality viticulture in the Piacenza area since the early 1980s, owing to the initiative of the Ferrari and Perini cousins.
We tasted “Lo Straniero,” their organically grown Pinot Noir, which also contains 5% Pinot Tintourier, and we have to say that wine really piqued our interest. We all know that Pinot Noir is a difficult vine to tame; it is admired by producers but also dreaded since the line between producing a wonderful wine and a “banal” product is frequently blurred.
Il Poggiarello achieved a surprising result by producing a Pinot Noir of exceptional quality, which, thanks to a deft use of wood (second passage barriques for 12 months), provides the nose with very pleasant notes of red fruit beginning with currants, marasca cherries, wild strawberries, but also elegant spicy hints of cloves.
Very delightful in the palate, with outstanding drinkability and yet nimble tannins that ensure an unusual length.
We paired it with an excellent roasted rabbit and it was a great choice.
The company has been created by the families Ferrari and Perini in 1980. Il Poggiarello, brand of Cantine 4 Valli, is committed to the enhancement of the Piacenza’s vines tradition and aims for the maximum excellence. The care of the vineyards, from the breeding systems to the soil management, from vegetative containment to thinning of the bunches, up to the strictly manual harvest, has allowed “Il Poggiarello” to reach, in a few years, a qualified presence in the Italian and foreign markets, strengthened by prestigious and international awards. Today, the company count on 20 hectares of eco-sustainable vineyards, which have been certified organic since 2018.
