We look forward to returning to visit Borgo Conventi, the Farra d’Isonzo estate (Gorizia), in the heart of the Collio, acquired in 2019 by the Moretti Polegato family, already owner of the well-known Villa Sandi winery. In the 30 hectares estate whites vines are the masters (Sauvignon, Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Chardonnay, just to mention the main ones) accompanied by an authoritative presence of the most famous Friulian reds (such as Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Schioppettino).

When tasting Borgo Conventi’s Sauvignon 2019 we understood once again how Collio is a perfect terroir for this great white grape. It’s a territory that expresses Sauvignon in an absolutely original  and clearly distinguishable way.

The nose is immediately expressed both by clear vegetal sensations of tomato leaf, but also by white flowers (wisteria) as well as citrus notes of cedar and an elegant hint of sage. In the mouth, excellent balance with a nice sensation of “sweet sapidity” which should not appear as a contradiction but as a key element of the extraordinary drinkability of Borgo Coventi Sauvignon. Great persistence with a finish that brings back to the pleasant vegetal sensations.

We paired it with an excellent risotto with asparagus and we couldn’t have made a better choice.

Company Profile

Giancarlo Moretti Polegato and his family acquired Borgo Conventi, renowned winery with vineyards in the Collio area in 2019. It was an easy and heartfelt choice to make, but it was also shaped by the belief in the great potential of an appellation that is ideal for grape growing. Founded in 1975, it has been named after a cloister built by Dominican Fathers.

The winery is among the most modern ones in the region and since the foundation it has been focused on extreme care viticulture and in wine making. It’s a winery with a deep territorial identity in one of the most prestigious production areas in Italy.

The importance of an appellation’s identity and the preservation of a grape variety’s classic characteristics is the basis of the Moretti Polegato family work. “It was a dream come true for producers like our family so deeply connected with territory, seeking for excellence while committed to environment safeguard and identity.”- says Mr Giancarlo Moretti Polegato.

The winery relies on about 30 ha vineyards in the Collio and Isonzo DOC area Aware that the future is depending on commitment to sustainability, Giancarlo Moretti Polegato has transferred to Borgo Conventi the same low- impact practices as the ones followed by Villa Sandi in the Prosecco area, and Borgo Conventi has been certified “Biodivesity Friend” since 2019 harvest.

“ We arrived in the land of Collio with the desire to learn more about an appellation that was new to us. Our goal was to work in harmony with the appellation’s rhythms, aware and grateful to a land that gives us everything to deliver high quality”. Sauvignon DOC Collio 2019 has been awarded with Tre Bicchieri Gambero Rosso 2021.
