We had long appreciated the wines of Casale del Giglio, until this summer we were finally able to get to know the winery during our Italian Wine Tour and we truly fell in love with this reality that gives prestige to Lazio’s viticulture.

There are many demonstrations of the peaks of excellence reached by Antonio Santarelli’s winery both in terms of “native” and “international” wine production.

Among the native vines highlighted by Casale del Giglio, a prominent place undoubtedly belongs to Biancolella di Ponza, a variety that arrived in the suggestive Lazio island from Ischia in the mid-18th century. In the island of Ponza Biancolella has certainly found its ideal habitat and it is no coincidence that Casale del Giglio’s “Faro della Guardia, Biancolella di Ponza, Lazio Igt” has received authoritative awards for many years.

We tasted the 2019 vintage and it was, since it was the first time for us, a wonderful surprise. Already to the nose there are citrus notes, in particular of orange blossom, but also clear hints of apricot and elegant sensations of mint. All within a fresh mineral matrix, that we have found in the mouth together with a very tasty flavor that gives an infinite persistence.

We paired it with a tasty spaghetti with seafood and we felt like we were on the island of Ponza.

Contrariamente ad altre parti del Lazio o ad altre regioni d’Italia, questo territorio era ancora vergine in termini di viticoltura quando Berardino Santarelli e suo figlio Antonio lanciarono il loro progetto di ricerca nel 1985. Oggi, Casale del Giglio ha convertito i suoi 180 ettari in vite selezionando i vitigni che avevano dimostrato il miglior adattamento al territorio e prodotto vini di migliore qualità.
