This is a Chardonnay we did not expect, and that surprised us. It was love at first sip. Everyone knows that the Chardonnay is the most widespread white grape variety in the world but every time we get surprised of how this variety is able to give different interpretations of itself depending on the area of production and winemaking style. Paolo Leo winery in Salento offers an interpretation to our extraordinary opinion that witnesses the great wine vocation of this land among the most evocative of Puglia region. 2014 was not an easy year for Italian wine but tasting Paolo Leos Numen you would not say that, absolutely. In fact, this wine offers an amazing aromatic intensity where fruity scents are mixed with personal tastes of hydrocarbons and white flowers such as jasmine and wisteria. In the mouth a surprisingly silky texture, you feel the role of short-drying of the grapes to have more body and smoothness without losing the beautiful fragrance of the Chardonnay. Very drinkable. We paired it with an extraordinary grouper. Well done Paolo Leo!

PAOLOLEO

The history of the Leo family has been always characterized by their love and passion for vines and wines since the early ‘900. In those years, the company’s founder, the grandfather and namesake of the last heir Paolo Leo, began making wine from grapes picked in “Palmento”, the old underground tanks he used before were now restored and used used as a cellar for storing and aging wine. The mission of Leos has remained unchangeable during the last century: to offer consumers wines that mirror the smell, flavors and the character of Puglia. In the late 80s, a deep passion and tenacity has led the current owner Paolo Leo to undertake an entrepreneurial path based on the valorisation of wines made from indigenous grape varieties of the Salento like Primitivo, Negroamaro, Malvasia Bianca and Nera di Lecce.
The modern company headquarters, founded in 1989, occupy a total area of about 15,000 square meters, equipped with a state-of-the-art vinification system. It has a barrel room of 400 square meters containing 500 oak barrels with a capacity of 225 liters. However, these modern winemaking technologies were used in harmony with ancient tradition of which the Leo family has always respected.
