It is always good to be pleasantly surprised by wines you don’t know and that are not very famous. This is the case of Terra di Ginestre DOP Terre di Cosenza, a white wine from the winery Antiche Vigne. A small (only 14 hectares) and young (founded in 2004) winery located in the ancient Valley of Savuto, one of the most suitable sites for viticulture in Calabria. They started since the very beginning to invest on autoctone varieties of Calabria, such as sweet Magliocco, locally known as Arvino, Greco Nero, Pecorello and Mantonico. We very much enjoyed their Savuto Classico and this white wine convinced us as well. You have a clear perception of the importance of altitude in this wine (the vineyards are located between 450 and 800 m above sea level on slopes of 5 to 35% degree) which ensures extraordinary temperature excursion that emphasises the aromatic quality of wines, especially white ones. An excellent blend of Greco Bianco, Mantonico and Pecorello that gives us a very pleasant wine. At the nose you can smell apple and pear, but also tropical fruits (pineapple above all) and elegant notes of acacia and vanilla. In mouth there’s a mixture of freshness and savory. A good structure and a perfect balance between acidity and smoothness. We paired it with a tasty rabbit roast flavoured with olives taggiasche and we nailed it.
ANTICHE VIGNE
“Antiche Vigne” is a small wine company in the heart of the ancient Savuto valley in Calabria, southern Italy or as the Greeks Enotria-a land once called it where vines grow and wine is produced. Since the beginning in 2004, our company goal has always been to focus on producing high quality wines. Company vineyards extend across an area of 14 hectares, located in the districts of Marzi, Altilia and Carpanzano the northern area of the Savuto Valley. In order to maintain the balance of tradition and innovation we have extensively researched both technologies and techniques to produce our wine. As a result we have been able to create a very typical DOC product made from local grapes such as the grape Magliocco dolce, locally known as Arvino, the Greco Nero, the Pecorello, the Mantonico and the Malvasia. These are all the key factors for the quality of our wines processed and produced within our own cellar. These typical grapes Magliocco dolce (Arvino) and Greco Nero are the basis of our red & rosè wines for both lines ‘Radici’ DOC/P and ‘AV AnticheVigne’ IGP, all well conceived and full of promises. The “Savuto Superiore Reserve DOC/P” oaked for 20/22 months then bottled and kept for at least one year in our cellar. The “Savuto Classico DOC/P” holds the flavor of natural taste after a long ripening time of 12 months in our cellar. The “Iuvenis DOP Terre di Cosenza” young and dry it has been created with the idea of a fresh flavor. The rosè “Gida DOC/P” delicate and fruity. A white wine “Terra di Ginestre DOP Terre di Cosenza”, precisely selecting the best local white grapes from the Savuto valley-Greco Bianco, Mantonico and Pecorello- completes the ‘Radici’ line.
